book review, and other miscellany

ok. on a recommendation from mein schwester, i read chuck palahniuk's invisible monsters. let me just warn you that this book is not for the faint hearted, neither is it for the conservative or homophoebic. it was good, though not the sort of book i think i'll return to again and again. nope, once was probably enough. the writing was, well, i didn't get into it until about halfway through the book. i read it while up in denver all last week with not much else to do on the weeknights. but, this also is in regards to my prior complaint about not reading enough. it revived me. and i ran right through it. okay, basically, the book is fucked up. there is really no other way to describe it. anyone else out there read it? i am, however, excited to read more of his books.

i bought everything is illuminated by jonathan safran foer. i saw the movie first, which was incredibly well done. i'm excited to get into that one.

i've been working on a clockwork orange all summer for the third time; it's supposed to be the next read in book club, but i don't know for sure what's going to happen with that. i'd love to get it going again; it'd be a nice connection with the kids, but i don't want to be the only one doing all the work for it again. i wasn't the only one supposedly in charge, you know.

i miss the kids. not so much the bullshit admin stuff, but i miss the kids. i see some of them occasionally. i wonder what they think of me? it was a good experience. but i'm still pretty suspicious about the hows and whys of what went down. i find myself being less trustful of anyone involved. is this normal, justified, or do i need to just let it go and move on?

we lit our first fire last night. it was lovely. i came home at 5pm after my parents' surprise bday party (which, by the way, went swimmingly) and put on pajamas for the rest of the evening, sat in front of the fire, and watched a movie. it was great.

    You know Chuck lives in Portland, right? Heck yeah. You should read his book Survivor. It's messed up too. Actually they're all messed up. Did you ever read Fight Club?

    that is the first one of his i've read. but i have a whole stack. i need a break before a return. and yes, fight club is on the list.
